Bungalow 8, Mumbai's first concept store, specializes in the most unusual and unconventional Indian-inspired interiors and fashion finds.
When it opened in 2003, Bungalow 8 was a retail enigma, challenging conventional practice through its unusual locations, avante garde interiors, lived in displays and local/global product selection. Its uncompromising vision immediately charmed the global style brigade like music icons Sting and Madonna and design luminaries Tom Dixon and Tricia Guild. The only store in India to be labeled as one of the ten best stores in the world by design bible Wallpaper* (UK), Bungalow 8 often finds itself in the company of the biggest and best names both domestically and internationally.
With an eye on preservation, Bungalow 8 occupies three floors in a heritage building in the heart of the art and cultural district of Mumbai, Colaba. It is in every way an architectural diary of another era interpreted through today's prism. There is little to suggest that this is a retail store, it could be the house of some grand damme quite comfortable straddling the past and present. Dining and living occupy the first floor, bath and bed the second and fashion the third, but there is an interaction between the three; what you see is a way of life and not merely a showcase.
Bungalow 8’s philosophy is essentially about opposites sitting effortlessly next to each other. It is about the confidence to do the unexpected, pairing vintage furniture with modern day home accessories, traditional craft with post modern design and Indian-ness with Global-ness.
