The Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA) is one of the oldest and largest non-profit community service organisations in India. A community based organisation, we work collaboratively with government and non government organisations, and partners to provide a range of programmes and services to build strong people, strong families, strong communities.

YMCA is a worldwide voluntary movement for women and men with special emphasis on youth. It seeks to build a community of justice with love, peace and reconciliation. It adopts a holistic approach of developing young minds, body and spirit, looking beyond the isolated symptoms, such as unemployment and homelessness.

Founded in 1844, it works through 14,000 local associations and 40 million members in 127 countries. The YMCA seeks to help young people to develop their wholesome personality – the mind, body and spirit – on sound principles. The basis and model for the YMCA is the personality of Jesus Christ whose life and teachings form its guiding principles. The word ‘Christian’ in the name indicates the spirit behind the YMCA and its motivation.

Bombay YMCA, located in the western Indian city of Mumbai (formerly Bombay), is affiliated to the World Alliance of YMCAs, the Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs and the National Alliance of YMCAs in India.

Bombay YMCA is one of the liveliest YMCAs in the country and caters to men, women and children of all religions, creed and cultures with no bias whatsoever. Its activities are varied and provides opportunities for growth and development for every section of the society. Based in the commercial capital of India, the Bombay YMCA has ample opportunities to reach out, touch and change the lives of many of the 18 million people, specially the youth and those from the lower strata of society.

Bombay YMCA has seven branches and eleven Centres and departments spread over the city of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Its range of activities include providing accommodation & hospitality, meeting & conference facilities, outdoor games, indoor games, art & cultural activities, educational institutes & vocational training Centres, intellectual pursuits, social services, camping services, etc.

Young Men’s Christian Association is a membership organisation. It is cosmopolitan in its membership policies. Therefore any person, male or female, irrespective of race, religion, caste, community, class or creed, who is in sympathy with the objectives of the Association can become a member. YMCA offers its members opportunities for enriching body, mind and spirit through its various activities.

The Central branch has been ‘a happening place’ since inception in 1903. Over the years, activities have grown manifold. From providing a ‘home away from home’ for young men seeking a career in this city, the Central branch has a wide range of activities to offer to people of all age groups, not to mention the underprivileged people.

The site of the Apollo Bunder premises was originally given to the YMCA on a free lease by the Government in 1881. Things changed with the passing of the Bombay Improvement Trust Act in 1898.

The Board arranged to take on 99 years’ lease from 1904 a plot of land measuring 2250 sq. yards on the Wellington Lines Estate on Wodehouse Road. The opening ceremony of the building took place on September 25, 1906, at the hands of Governor Lamington, Governor of Bombay.

The Wodehouse branch was renamed as Central branch in 1908 as most of the activities were Centred thereand it was also the headquarters of Bombay YMCA from where the General Secretaries functioned.

With the opening of the new building the headquarters of the Bombay YMCA was shifted from Apollo Bunder to the Central branch and remained there for the next 66 years, till it got shifted to YMCA International House.
