TARQ: Sanskrit for “discussion, abstract reasoning, logic and cause”, is a contemporary art gallery in Mumbai dedicated to growing a conversation around art from a diverse range of contexts.
Our focus is on maintaining close relationships with our artists and patrons, and to encourage thoughtful acquisitions of art that is pertinent to a wider notion of collecting.
Apart from our regular shows, we are also committed to building an educational structure that enables the arts community to grow through thought, discussion and action.
TARQ found its home in Dhanraj Mahal, one of Mumbai’s iconic Art Deco buildings located a stone’s throw away from the Gateway of India. Dhanraj Mahal was built in the 1930s and was the former palace of the Raja Dhanrajgir of Hyderabad.Enclosing a lush green courtyard in the midst of a chaotic urban exterior, Dhanraj Mahal was designed by the architectural firm of Gregson, Batley and King, and is now home to several commercial enterprises as well as private residences.
Having housed the Navy in World War II, the building has recently been restored to its former glory, highlighting its place in the immense design history of Mumbai. Located in Colaba, TARQ is in the midst of Mumbai’s thriving art district, which is home to several art galleries, museums, restaurants and stores.
Hena Kapadia is TARQ’s founder and gallery director.
She has been involved in art world both in Mumbai and abroad in various capacities.
